Surrealism started to become evident in literature, and poetry after the first World War.  It’s a way of letting what is known as the ‘unconscious mind’ to come through, with all the strange ways an unconscious mind works, for example, illustrating strange ideas and contradictions, or even dreams.  They often become the reality in surrealist poetry.
