We are always truly grateful when poets approach us to help care for and preserve their own archives, and last month we had a truly exciting donation which you get to hear about first. Robert John Griffiths Johnson (1912 – 1987) was a friend of W H Auden and also a regional director of what became the Arts Council when it was first set up after WW2. He was involved in the foundation of the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival with Benjamin Britten and went on to establish the John Johnson Literary Agency in 1956. At some point Robert (John) Johnson was presented with, or acquired, this fantastic collection of poetry. It was recorded in 1946 and includes readings by T. S. Eliot, Edith Sitwell, Cecil Day Lewis, Louis Mac Niece and Stephen Spender, with additional readings by David Peel and an introduction by Walter de la Mare.
As you can imagine, with those names involved we are very keen to see what recordings might be saveable from this really early set of discs. We will let you know as soon as we find out more, and we will aim to raise the funds we need to make these recordings accessible again through our collections. Our heartfelt thanks goes to John Johnson’s family for this amazing donation. If you have any insider info, knowledge or expertise about this fabulous find, we would love to hear from you.
