Pastoral poems seek to find an ideal way of living, based around the natural world, rural life, and the seasons.  Pastoral poems are often designed for an urban audience.  The effect of a pastoral poem is to try and turn a complex life into a simple one.  Sometimes, pastoral poetry will also be called ‘bucolic’.
