anna (n) – an old monetary value of India and Pakistan, equal to one-sixteenth of a rupee
ashram (n) – religious retreat
bacilli (pl. n) – rod-shaped bacterium, found primarily in soil
bhikshuks (n) – religious mendicants (someone dependent on alms for sustenance)
crushing seed (v) – Bene Israel tradition of oil pressing, which started soon after the group arrived in India
dialectic (adj) – 1) the art of investigating or discussing the truth of opinions. 2) inquiry into metaphysical contradictions and their solutions. 3) the existence or action of opposing social forces, concepts, etc
élan (n) – vigorous spirit or enthusiasm
equipoise (n) – even distribution of weight
Gethsemane (n) – a garden outside of Jerusalem where Jesus was arrested as mentioned in Mark 14
Hindiwallahs (pl. n) – Hindi-speakers. This term has a tone of prejudice, as ‘wallah’ is often applied to artisans or low-class professions eg ‘taxiwallah’ is a taxi driver or ‘bhujiawallah’ is a snack seller
Indirabehn (n) – Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (1917-1984) was India’s first and only female Prime Minister. ‘Behn’ is Gujarati word used while addressing a woman with respect.
noumena (pl.n) – objects or events that happen and/or exist outside of human sense and/or perception
paan (n) – mixture of areca-nut, lime, tobacco wrapped in a betel leaf, for chewing
Ram Rajya – Gandhi’s model of governance, which involves the empowerment of people at grassroots, equality of opportunity, decentralization of administration, cooperative participation of people, and democratic self-governance.
