Carte Blanche
Now there’s no desiring you
I sit in street cafes at tables
with a blank sheet of paper.
The trees are just trees, the cars
are just cars, and all the city goes on
with no need at all to tell you it.
Now there’s no desiring you,
at night the sky is empty of all longing –
it is simply dark, very distant, full
of stars. And morning will break –
with a certain number of hours,
all of which need to be planned for.
Now there’s no desiring you,
there is just so much time
to fill up and up with unlonging,
which is blank, quite blank, and free.
