“My name is Bhanu Kapil. I was born in the United Kingdom but lived for a long time in the United States. And now here we are again. Here I am again. Here we are again. Together, a kind of together. I'm just going to read some poems and perhaps say a little bit before each one. And the first one is called collude. I think this was a commission I can't quite remember, but there are references to the part of Colorado where I lived for a long time. The Valentine City, which is Loveland, Colorado, and there's a reference to a cup of coffee in Longmont. There was Highway 66, which transgressed Longmont. And it was said that there on the corner somewhere near that corner where 287 and Highway 66 cross, Jack Kerouac, which is it's in on the road once pulled over or got out of the car, he was hitchhiking in and lay down for a nap. I guess under a tree, a cottonwood tree somewhere on that corner. And so, the institution where I used to teach, not so much an institution as the remnants of an institution, was called Jack Kerouac's School of Disembodied Poetics, part of Naropa University in Boulder. So, this was on my commute, and I loved stopping at this coffee stand on that corner. On the days when I was teaching just to grab some coffee and commune with Jack Kerouac. And there's a reference to Pinky, who became a few years later, Pinky Agarwalia star of a science fiction vignette that was published as part of Unknown Language, a collaboration with Hildegard von Bingen and Hugh Lemmy, or vice versa. So those are some of the references. ”

Are you parched?  

Is your name Pinky?  

What colour is the skin of your inner arm, creamy?  

Valentine’s City rebate a box of chocolates from Safeway.  

Yours, yours, yours. 

In its entirety.  

Don’t collude with your inability to give or receive love.  

Collude instead with the lining of the universe.  

Descent, rotation, silk water, brief periods of intense sunlight  

                                                  striated with rose pink glitter.  

The glitter can only get us  

So far.  

Here we are at the part with the asphalt airstream Tupperware  

                                             veins, some nice light stretching.  

Call me.  

This is a poem for a beloved.  

Who never arrived.
